Material Science and Engineering

Materials scientists and engineers discover and develop the materials that enable technologies that improve lives and solve the world’s most pressing problems.

Pulchowk Campus, Institute of Engineering (IOE) offers a Master of Science degree in materials science and engineering under the Department of Applied Science and Chemical Engineering. This programme provides education leading to a degree either of Master of Science or Master of Engineering with an average yearly student intake of 20 students. This is an account regarding the intake of the 5th batch of M.Sc. students at this college for the academic session 2022-2024.

Materials Science programme here at IOE has a very strong interdisciplinary approach with both students and faculties coming from different backgrounds. This is a two-year (4 semesters) master’s degree programme and is futuristic with a strong focus on both experimental and computational approaches to the discovery, characterization, selection, design and application of materials. The program emphasizes multidisciplinary research in a variety of areas, including metals, ceramics, composites, biomaterials and nano-electronics. The aim is to allow young scientists and engineers to contribute to cutting edge research, while at the same time providing broad and deep understanding of materials science and engineering. The curriculum consists of a carefully chosen set of core courses, accompanied by a set of electives enabling the student to excel in a sub-discipline of their choosing either tailored especially for them (through discussions with their academic advisor) or by following one of five previously developed emphases (Biomaterials, Electronic Materials, Structural Materials, Materials Physics and Chemistry, Energy Technology and Nanomaterials). The program prepares graduates for a variety of careers in fields such as nanotechnology, electronics, computing, biomedical, automotive and aerospace industries, as well as government agencies and research laboratories.

Currently, the Institute of Engineering has established collaborative linkages of M.Sc in materials science and engineering program with IIT, Roorkee, India. This collaboration will cooperate in the exchange of faculty and researchers, exchange of students, joint research, and joint activities promoting materials science and engineering education. Moreover, this joint program helps the M.Sc. students will get the benefit of the resources of IIT Roorkee, India.
